Desford Divas’ get ready to tackle the Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge for local people in need

A group of 16 friends from Desford are getting ready to tackle the Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge on 23rd September to help provide food, clothing and beds for local families in need.

Devised by local charity, Charity Link and launched in 2016, The Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge is a unique 16 mile walking or running challenge around Charnwood. It takes in the peaks of Beacon Hill, Bardon Hill (the highest point in Leicestershire) before finishing with Old John in Bradgate Park.

Led by team captain Dee Beckett, the Desford Divas have been training hard for the challenge and organising fundraising events, including a curry night for friends and family, to help reach their goal of raising £1,600 for Charity Link, and are hoping to get to £2,000.

Dee, who lives in Desford and runs Mosaic, a company which coaches local businesses to grow and improve their performance, says: “I met some of the team at Charity Link through business networking, and was really inspired to get involved, after learning more about the charity. I not only want to raise vital funds but I also really want to increase awareness  of the fantastic work this charity undertakes as many people don’t know about Charity Link and yet it helps to improve the lives of over 5,000 people each year in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland – our very own community.“

“We have a fantastic group of ladies in the village who are passionate about our community and they were really up for this challenge when I told them about it. The support we’ve received so far has been brilliant and we are delighted to have already raised over £1,000.  We’ve been on a number of training walks together so we should be able to enjoy the challenge and finish without too many aches and pains! We are already looking forward to a well earnt glass of bubbles at the end and hope by then to have smashed our fundraising target so that Charity Link can provide even more essential items to improve the lives of local people in hardship and crisis.”

Sue McEniff, Director at Charity Link, says: “It’s great to have the Desford Divas joining us on this year’s Leicestershire 3 Peaks and we are so grateful for their support which really will help to change local lives. There is always a great atmosphere on the day, with everyone knowing that they are doing something amazing to help ensure that local people have the very basics in life and the means to be warm, safe and fed, no matter what crisis, illness, disability or difficulty they may be facing.”

In 2017, 60 challengers took part in Charity Link’s Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge and the event raised over £6,000. The charity hopes that over 80 people will take part in the 2018 challenge and that over £8,000 will be raised.  This would enable the charity, which works in a unique way (for every £10 donated it can raise £50 from charitable trusts), to provide £40,000 worth of essential items. Charity Link supports people with a chronic illness or disability, vulnerable elderly people or those affected by mental health issues, redundancy, domestic violence and family breakdown.  Items provided include clothing, beds, cookers and mobility equipment.
