Poverty Action for schools

Poverty Action Week (PAW) is a great way for schools and colleges in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire to support people in their local communities, whilst also giving a great ‘hook’ on which to get pupils of any age to think about the wider issues around hardship on their doorsteps.

Wear a Funky Scarf Day is a simple and fun fundraising day that schools or colleges of any size can support. Simply ask staff and pupils to wear their favourite or most funky scarves on the day and give a donation of their/the school’s choice.

We chose the scarf as most people will have one to hand to wear on the day (no need to go out and buy something for the day); it is also a symbol of warmth and represents support for the people we help, many of whom are unable to keep warm over winter.

We would be delighted if your school or college would take part.

There are many ways to add extra interest and fun for the day, including:
‘Decorate your scarf’ competitions.
Sponsored knit-a-thons.
Treasure hunt (find the scarves).
Cake sale, with scarf decorations or Wear a Funky Scarf Day flags.
Fill the giant scarf (a simple drawing on giant card, for example) with coins …… children can ask friends and family to donate their loose change to fill the picture.

More information and FAQs can be found on our Wear a Funky Scarf Day page.

You could ask pupils to think about the reasons for hardship in their local communities, take turns at being Prime Minister for the day and saying how they would tackle local poverty or design an awareness poster (which we’d love to see).

If you are are Twitter, remember to tag us in @charitylink or use #funkyscarfday #povertyactionweek and we will also share what you are up to.

We can provide promotional posters, leaflets for bookbags and stickers for those taking part.  Email rachel.markham@charity-link.org or call 0116 222 2218 and let us know/tell us how we can help you to make your day a great success!

Please do let us know of your intention to take part – we can then keep you up to date with the latest news, and if you are happy for us to do so, share news of your support on our social media pages.
