Many supermarkets have community support schemes whereby customers at local stores can nominate a charity they’d like to see receive support, and then if the charity is shortlisted, customers can vote for that charity.

Along with giving national charity support, Waitrose offers customers the opportunity to nominate local charities for support. Simply visit your local store and complete a ‘Community Matters’ form and hand this to the customer services desk. Each month three good causes are chosen and customers use the green tokens they are given after shopping to vote for their choice. The more green tokens which are received, the bigger share of the monthly £1,000 donation that charity/cause will receive. Find out more about Waitrose Community Matters here.
Each year customers can vote for a charity for the store to support. Each summer, stores shortlist three local charities for customers to choose from. The idea is to choose charities stores can support all year round with fundraising and volunteering. Customers vote on which of the three charities to back – either in store or at the Local Charity of the Year site. We’ll let you know if we make the shortlist!
Asda also has a green token scheme. Visit the website to find your local store running the scheme (i.e the East Midlands Region for Leicester stores including Fosse Park, Abbey Lane, Oadby and Thurmaston) to see causes currently being voted for. Each quarter there are three charities shortlisted for support. At the end of the period the charity/cause with the most tokens will receive £500, the other two charities will receive £200. Every three months three new successful nominees are put forward for voting in Asda stores running the Green Token Giving Programme. Voting closes at the end of March, June, September and December. You can nominate Charity Link for support by apply online after choosing your specific ‘store locator page’, or by picking up a voting form in store, completing it and handing it back to customer services.
