Alice’s story

After escaping domestic abuse, Alice and her son were in desperate need to set up their new home to feel safe and rebuild their lives.

A mother and her son enjoy a relaxing weekend together on a swing, surrounded by nature. They cherish their bond, creating memorable moments in the peaceful park setting.

Alice left an abusive relationship to make a new start for herself and her young son. This was very challenging for her, as her ex-partner had been extremely controlling, including taking charge of all the finances.

She left with no savings and, now being the sole carer for her son, Alice also had to reduce her working hours, which meant a drop in her already small income.

Whilst a financial struggle, renting a small private flat felt like a positive step forward for Alice and her son. Then, not long after moving in, Alice was informed that there had been a change in circumstances and the property was being sold. This left the family homeless.

Alice sought help, and the family has now been rehoused – a huge relief. However, the property was unfurnished, and Alice did not have any funds to buy the essential items she and her son desperately needed to make it a home.

Alice’s support worker referred her to us for help during this difficult period. We’ve now been able to support Alice with a cooker, a fridge freezer and washing machine, helping the family to have a decent standard of living going forward as they rebuild their lives and a new safe home.

"It’s fantastic to see all the ways the community comes together to improve the lives of people in need. From undertaking challenges, to dress-up days, quizzes, raffles and cake-bakes, to donating, setting up a regular gift, volunteering or spreading the word, it all helps to ensure people living in hardship are warm, safe and fed and have the basics in life that we all deserve."
