Hali’s story
As she battled breast cancer, Hali was struggling to ensure a decent standard of living for herself and her children due to the financial impact of her illness.
Hali has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Over recent months she has struggled to cope due to the health difficulties and emotional impact this has caused.
Due to her illness, Hali has had to give up supply teaching and this has left her struggling to pay for the essentials she and her three children need. As a single parent and now on limited benefits, Hali had no way to afford to buy replacements when both the family’s cooker and fridge freezer broke in quick succession. This added a huge amount of extra stress to daily life for Hali at an already difficult time.
She struggled to provide hot and healthy meals for the family and with no way to store fresh food she was facing the extra expense and physical impact of having to shop frequently. Without a fridge she
was also unable to store some of her cancer medication at home.
Finding it increasingly difficult to cope, both physically and mentally, Hali approached her local Citizens Advice centre and she was referred to our friendly, dedicated team for help. Using their expert knowledge, the team were able to make applications on Hali’s behalf to charitable trusts for people in need and successfully untapped the funds needed. We have now purchased and delivered both a cooker and fridge freezer to the family.
These items, which many of us are lucky enough to take for granted, are making a hugely positive impact on the family’s quality of life – reducing worry, helping Hali to plan meals and shop more cost-effectively, and enabling Hali to store her medication correctly as she continues her treatment.
