Helen’s story

We previously supported Helen in 2017 with a powered wheelchair but now needs a replacement. With multiple physical ailments, Helen needs her powered wheelchair for her independence, wellbeing and to have a decent quality of life.

Helen

Helen has multiple physical ailments making it difficult for her to get around and is reliant on a powered wheelchair for daily use. We previously supported Helen with a wheelchair in 2017, however it now needs replacing as it is not working properly. Her failing chair is making life more of a struggle.

To add to her challenges, Helen and her teenage son have been targeted by anti-social behaviour from their neighbours. They are looking to move but, in the meantime, this has increased the amount to which Helen is house bound.

Without a working powered wheelchair, Helen was losing her independence, access to the local community, and she was unable to spend quality time with her son outside their home. Helen was keen to do as much for herself as possible, and not put extra demands on her son, who already acts as a carer
for her.

With powered wheelchairs costing thousands of pounds, Helen does not have the means to meet this cost. However, this is an essential item for her daily life and wellbeing.

Helen’s Occupational Therapist referred her to Charity Link, and we have been able to help and provide her with the powered wheelchair she urgently needed. This powered wheelchair has restored Helen’s dignity and independence and we are so pleased, that with your support, together we have been able to help her.

"It’s fantastic to see all the ways the community comes together to improve the lives of people in need. From undertaking challenges, to dress-up days, quizzes, raffles and cake-bakes, to donating, setting up a regular gift, volunteering or spreading the word, it all helps to ensure people living in hardship are warm, safe and fed and have the basics in life that we all deserve."
