Ivan’s story

After being released from prison, Ivan was keen to make a fresh start and build a positive life. However, tragedies and set backs made this more difficult.

Portrait of middle eastern refugee

Ivan had spent a few years in prison, but on his release he was keen to make a fresh start. Ivan secured a job and a tenancy and was working to rebuild his life.

Sadly, a few months later, one of his close friends took their own life. Ivan was not able to cope with this loss, and his mental health deteriorated quickly leading to him having a mental health breakdown. He was referred to a psychiatric unit where he stayed for some time.

Once Ivan returned home, he was even more determined to live a positive life. He was desperate to improve his situation and make his home liveable for his own mental health. But on a low wage from his work, Ivan could not afford to purchase all the items he needed to feel settled into his home, such as a kettle, microwave, cookware and crockery.

Ivan was referred to Charity Link for help, and we are delighted to have now provided Ivan with the kitchen items he needed. He can now cook and eat healthy meals to support his mental health recovery and allow him to have a decent standard of living while his rebuilds his life. They may seem like small items, but they are the building blocks for improved wellbeing.

Everyone that we support at Charity Link has their own story to tell – stories of hardship, challenges, but also of hope for a better future. We are proud to support people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds to move forward to a more positive future through the provision of essential items to help improve their health, wellbeing and dignity.

This is only possible with your support. Thank you.

"It’s fantastic to see all the ways the community comes together to improve the lives of people in need. From undertaking challenges, to dress-up days, quizzes, raffles and cake-bakes, to donating, setting up a regular gift, volunteering or spreading the word, it all helps to ensure people living in hardship are warm, safe and fed and have the basics in life that we all deserve."
